SAP HANA, which stands for High Performance Analytic Appliance, is a sophisticated platform comprising both software and hardware. It seamlessly integrates database technologies with "in-memory" processing, aiming to support high performance. The first product optimized by SAP HANA was Business Warehouse (BW), introduced in 2011. However, it was in 2013 that the platform underwent a significant transformation with the introduction of a new mechanism written in the ABAP language.

SAP HANA serves not only as a data storage solution but is also intended to provide useful information, enhancing decision-making processes for better and faster outcomes. Before the advent of HANA, SAP utilized an Oracle Database implementation for their relational database solution. Following Oracle's acquisition of PeopleSoft, the company emerged as SAP's first major direct competitor. In 2011, SAP launched HANA, completing the SAP ecosystem and providing a comprehensive end-to-end solution for enterprises.

Challenges addressed by SAP HANA

  • Analytics Application: Dealing with large volumes of big data requires improved tools like Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes and further modularization in an n-dimensional structure, particularly in Business Warehouse (BW) and Business Intelligence (BI).
  • In-Memory Solution: Data is accessed in a central processing unit based on temporary storage in RAM, enabling the faster processing of terabytes of data. In-memory technology eliminates the need for storage in hard disk drives. When RAM is full, HANA intelligently removes less frequently used tables.
  • Parallel Processing: Storing database tables "by column" offers new possibilities and allows for better data compression. Additionally, it improves the execution time of operations such as SUM, COUNT, AVG, MIN, and MAX.
  • Real-Time Processing: Building on the previous three points, HANA is capable of delivering real-time processing as closely as possible. This is achieved through Event-Driven Design (EDD) technology.

SAP HANA components include

  • SAP HANA Appliance: Certification for servers and infrastructure where the SAP HANA Database can be implemented.
  • SAP HANA DB: Encompassing all technology related to the HANA DB, it leverages low memory costs, data processing capacity, and access to different business modules to offer better performance in analytics and transactions.
  • SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP): This component allows the development of SAP HANA applications for the internet and can be integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • SAP HANA Modeling Tools - SAP HANA Studio: Integrated with Eclipse, it facilitates the management of HANA servers.
  • SAP HANA Modeling Tools - SAP Web IDE: A complementary tool integrated for modeling and development purposes.
